About Goring By Sea
Goring-By-Sea is a quiet expanse of a neighbourhood near Worthing in West Sussex and it has been a borough of Worthing since 1929. The origins of the name refer either to the wedge shape of the land or to ‘Gara’s people’. The seafront in Goring, as it’s called by locals, is popular; especially on a sunny day and kitesurfers, even from as far as London, tend to congregate in front of the Sea Lane Cafe to enjoy the surf when the sea conditions are right. Goring-By-Sea is also known for a copy of the Sistine Chapel ceiling originally painted by Michelangelo, reproduced in English Martyrs Catholic Church by Gary Bevans. Another interesting claim to fame is that Pete Townshend from rock band The Who recorded sounds of Goring-By-Sea for the album, Quadrophenia.
Families and community groups will head for Goring Green on many a sunny day where there are standing barbecues set out. It makes for a perfect spot to relax with family and friends, with a football or for cricket, while enjoying the sea views and warm breeze, whcih comes in from the English Channel. The location is very popular in the summer months but it’s big enough to cater for large groups of people, with a little woodland nearby too for those who want a quiet moment. It also takes just a minute or two to walk down the pebble beach to enjoy the sea, whether the tide is in or out.
