About Litlington
Litlington village in the Cuckmere valley of East Sussex, not far from Lewes, originates in Saxon times. Set in beautiful surroundings, one claim to fame is that the mistress of King George IV, Maria Fitzherbert, once lived in the village. A chalk horse figure was etched into a nearby hill in the 19th century, replacing an earlier figure which had faded.
It is the rural charm of Litlington which can be so enticing for visitors who enjoy the village but also the remarkable surroundings of the South Downs National Park with its abundant flora and fauna, which are exceptional. Thirsty visitors can also join locals at the Plough and Harrow pub, which dates back from the 17th century and so has a long history of hospitality. The pub serves an impressive minimum of six real ales at any given time during opening hours.
