Horley is a commuter town in Surrey but on the border with West Sussex – not far from Redhill and Reigate, as well as Crawley and Gatwick Airport. Nearby villages include Salforrds and Sidlow, Charlwood and Smallfield. As a settlement, Horley is relatively self-sufficient with a great mix of shops in the high street and a number of business parks. The area used to be heavily forested and is referred to as the Manor of Horley in the Domesday Book (1086). One historic building of interest is the impressively named Thunderfield Castle, a 12th century bailey and ring build, just a mile to the east. In the 19th century, Horley opened to the outside world with turnpikes installed and both the railway and a railway station. Horley’s first scout patrol was founded in 1908 which has now linked with 2nd Horley.
