About Newick
Newick in Lewes District is a village just six miles east from Haywards Heath. It’s known for a tremendous bonfire night celebration, which bonfire societies support from across the county. The village also boasts a lovely array of shops and three pubs. There is a parish church, two chapels and an evangelical free church as well as a village hall, primary school and a manor within the confines of Manor Park, to the south of the parish. Newick’s amateur drama productions started a young Dirk Bogarde on his path to Hollywood success!
Village life in Newick is booming with an impressive 30 societies and clubs offering various pastimes for residents who have settled and set up home along streets such as Allington Road, Newick Hill, Jackies Lane, Church Road and Station Road linked to Western Road and following through to Goldbridge Road.
Newick’s links to the railway are remembered by part of the former East Grinstead to Lewes line serving, in the current day, tourists as a section of the Bluebell Railway. The original line was closed even before Beeching’s cuts, with Newick and Chailey Railway Station closing in 1958. Sheffield Park, the next station north of Newick, is also used as a stopping point by the Bluebell Railway what with its famous heritage line, which attracts so much interest from railway enthusiasts. Barcombe was the next station south of Newick.
