About Chailey
Chailey, in the Lewes District, is a civil parish and village which comprises North and South Chailey, and South Street. The historic parish church, dedicated to St Peter, was built in 1256 and the settlement was famous for containing more churches than public houses. Chailey Common is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
The area of Chailey spreads quite far and includes direct roads such as the A275 and Lewes Road but also Station Road, Cinder Hill and Markstakes Lane where residents live, surrounded by scenic countryside, which is timeless in evoking rural idealism.
Chailey Moat is a two-story former rectory west of the village, which is grade two listed and dates from the 18th century. Also of interest is a windmill on the Red House Common. Another mill was sited on South Common but eroded in time. There are three schools as well in Chailey: Chailey Heritage School, catering for special needs, Chailey St Peters Primary School and Chailey School, a secondary school.
