About Balcombe
Balcombe is in Mid Sussex, some 16 miles north of Brighton. Experts believe the name means ‘Mining Place Camp’ and that is was originally a Roman mining community. There are some very impressive First World War murals in the village’s Victory Hall.
The village encompasses the Ouse viaduct at the southern end all the way to woodlands in the north east with some 600 homes spread along streets such as Haywards Heath Road, London Road, Stockcroft Road, Oldlands Avenue, Westup Road, Handcross Road and Mill Lane. Gatwick Airport isn’t that far away and the nearby countryside is simply charming.
Balcombe has its own railway station, constructed north of the Haywards Heath to Brighton main line. The station allows commuters to access London and Brighton for the purposes of work. Balcombe has attracted attention as a possible site for fracking, which has been met with local opposition. Permission has been given by the Environment Agency and the planned well would be 910m deep and with a horizontal 760m shape. Some residents have set up a co-operative known as REPOWER Balcombe to promote community ownership of solar power.
