About Southwick
Southwick is a friendly town on the coastal strip between Shoreham and Portslade-by-Sea in West Sussex. It is located just five miles west of Brighton and forms three broad areas: Old Shoreham Road to the South Downs; north of Brighton Road to Old Shoreham Road; and lastly the harbour south of Brighton Road. A Roman villa was at one time discovered beneath Manor Hall Road, now covered by housing. Known as ‘Esmerewick’ (East Pool hamlet) in Saxon times and noted in the Domesday Book, and later recorded as ‘Suthewicke’ in 1309 – the town boomed with the arrival of the railway and tourism from the 19th century. Shoppers enjoy the local retail mix offered in Southwick Square and the rec ground in Old Barn Way is frequented by sports clubs and leisurely pursuits are also enjoyed at The Green.
Southwick is unique in that it’s positioned next to the industrious Shoreham Port, which makes for a refreshingly unusual aspect for residents who enjoy their bustling town centre. Southwick Square and Southwick Street are not far away, as well as The Green. Residential areas include Albion Street, Underdown Road, Southview Road, Roman Crescent, Manor Hall Road, Whiterock Place and Victoria Road.
Residents in Southwick include some well-known faces in their professional field, including celebrities of-a-kind. Wing Commander Ken Wallis, who lived in Church Lane, is known for his career with the RAF and especially in aviation research with a specialism in autogyros. He flew one of his models, ‘Little Nellie’, standing in for Sean Connery’s James Bond for the 007 film, You Only Live Twice in 1967. Travel writer David Baboulene is a resident, to date, in Church Lane in Southwick and there have been other residents involved in the arts including artist Therese Lessore, journalist SPB Mais and film producer George Albert Smith. A wide range of musical tastes is represented by other inhabitants with contralto Dame Clare Butt and punk poet Attila the Stockbroker.
When it comes to Christmas time, Southwick buzzes as shoppers, both local and visitors, pack into the main shopping centre and order their turkeys from the butcher, vegetables from the greengrocer or pop across the road to the large oriental food supermarket to get some unusual festive treats. At any time of year, Southwick’s somewhat independent shopping scene is highly pleasurable and either before, or after, it doesn’t take long to walk down to the nearby port to enjoy the sea views. Southwick is a place full of leisurely surprises with a friendly community.
