About Horsham
Horsham is a major market town in Mid Sussex, an ideal location for commuters and the administrative centre for the district of the same name, which also hosts part of the River Arun. The town is a hub for business and used to trade in agricultural products. These days, industries which bolster Horsham’s economy tend to be in pharmaceuticals, finance, and various forms of technological development – as well as small scale versions of cottage industries such as brickmaking, brewing and printing.
Horse trading has been a traditional income generator in the town and it is believed that ‘horse home’ in Old English was how the settlement derived its modern name. The place evolved with the development of the Carfax, the pedestrianised square in the town centre, which also houses the local war memorial. Shops in the centre include high street chains but there is a good array of independent retailers, making for an interesting buying experience for residents and visitors alike.
Sites of interest within the town include the 17th to 19th century houses in the Causeway, ‘Normandy’ – another street of interesting houses in forms of artistic merit and an old well. Horsham Park has leisure facilities for both outdoor and indoor sports enthusiasts. North of Brighton Road, to the east, are a splendid mix of Victorian and Edwardian homes and mid 20th century style houses in the southern part, on the East Side. Suburbs of Horsham contain their own lively communities – New Town, Holbrook, Trafalgar, Tower Hill, Needles, Roffey, Littlehaven, Oakhill and North Heath.
A nugget of historical fame whistled through the town when a hailstone crashed down to Earth. Not just any hailstone either – but the heaviest ever recorded (140g) akin to a tennis ball. It’s thought the hailstone travelled at 224mph when it hit Horsham on September 5 1958.
Horsham in the present day is, without a doubt, a hive of activity on the town’s roads, which include Wimblehurst Road, Parsonage Road, Rusper Road, Crawley Road, Manor Fields, Comptons Lane, Arun Way and Clarence Road. The rural aspect is clear with the naming of some streets: Elm Grove, Hills Farm Way, Granary Way, Three Acres, Longfield Road, Stoneybrook and Farm Lane. An individual character is also seen with roads such as Jockey Mead, Greenway, Shandys Close and Blunts Way. The town is large to walk around (but accessible by bus and bike) and yet retains all the laidback appeal of a settlement half its size, possibly due to the setting within the beautiful countryside of Sussex
