About Haywards Heath
Haywards Heath is a commuter town ideally placed to reach Crawley and Gatwick Airport, Brighton and London. Located in Mid Sussex, this town of about 22,000 is undergoing a modernisation programme by Mid Sussex District Council under its masterplan initiative. The town was noted in records during the English Civil War when Royalist troops advanced from Chichester to Lewes, and there was a battle in the location. Yet it was fairly nondescript until the arrival of the railway in 1841, as with a number of other settlements, which saw the place flourish with development. Since then, it has seen a step by step residential growth and now holds a respectful reputation in the county. Olympic star Daley Thompson was once a member of the town’s athletics club. But surely the most famous resident, has to be the late Anthony Buckeridge’s literary schoolboy creation, Jennings. The author marked Haywards Heath as the place of residence for the cheeky lad’s family.
It’s always worth taking time to enjoy a saunter through the streets of Haywards Heath and admire the backdrop to charming residences in places such as Pasture Hill Road, Lucastes Avenue, Harlands Road, Paddockhall Road, Beech Hill, Meadow Lane and Newton Road. There is a hint of cultural interest in every corner, and a visitor would note the American connotations to Washington Road, America Lane and Western Road. Scamps Hill is an intriguing name and further afield, stretching forth from Pellingford Brook, is the equally delightfully named Slugwash Lane, alongside Lunce’s Hill and Colwell Lane. Haywards Heath is timeless in some respects and those familiar with its surroundings would no doubt recommend that visitors just take time out to enjoy the surroundings.
>Celebrities who have a connection to Haywards Heath include Emmerdale actor Mathew Bose (who played Paul Lambert in the soap series); Robert Kazinsky who was Sean Slater in Eastenders; England cricketer Jim Parks; singer Brett Anderson, the lead singer from pop group Suede, and also the band’s bassist Mat Osman. Greta Scacchi, the actress, was a pupil at Haywards Heath Grammaer School. Daley Thompson, famous Olympic decathlete, belonged to a local athletics club. Singer Natasha Bedingfield is also connected to Haywards Heath – she was born in the town.
Haywards Heath enjoys two twinning links with Traunstein in Bavaria, Germany, and also Bondues in Nord-Pas-de-Calais in France. Townsfolk in Haywards Heath organise various cultural exchanges and there is a road in Bolnore village, within the vicinity of the town, which has been named after the Bavarian counterpart – Traunstein Way. The town hall has a German postbox outside, which commemorates the relationship. The twinning link is rather typical of the generous-at-heart aspect of residents in Haywards Heath who are known for their hospitality.Haywards Heath has two primary schools for younger children and there is a main secondary school, which serves not only the town but also nearby areas. Oathall Community College, between Haywards Heath and Lindfield, has specialist facilities such as a farm, arts building, conference room and music centre, as well as classrooms, which are equipped to be at the forefront of technology. Private schools in the Haywards Heath area include Great Walstead School, and Tavistock and Summerhill School.
Haywards Heath has plenty of popular local attractions for both residents and visitors alike. The main leisure centre hosts a variety of sports and related classes. For those who enjoy a relaxing saunter, ideal spots in the town include Beech Hurst Gardens, Victoria Park and Borde Hill Gardens, as well as the main recreation ground. Shopping facilities are also plentiful in the town centre, especially at The Orchards and there are a good selection of restaurants and bars in Broadway.
