About Maresfield

Maresfield village, on the border of Ashdown Forest in Wealden District, East Sussex, is just one-and-a-half miles from Uckfield with the villages of Fairwarp and Nutley within the parish. Wealden’s iron industry played a crucial role in the economic development of the settlement, which boasted five iron furnaces in the 16th century. Agriculture has also been influential, led by the owners of Maresfield Park House. The village’s name stems from ‘marsh’ or ‘pool’ in Old English and the history stretches far back with the church founded in 1100. There was a Roman settlement before that.
