About Stanmer
Stanmer village dates from 765AD although possibly from Neolithic times and it was for many years closed-off and ruled by the lords of Stanmer. The Pelham family, living in Stanmer House, now a grade one listed building in Stanmer park, became the ruling nobles from the 18th century onwards. There is a working farm in the locality, a historic church and 18th century lodge houses in the park.
The Stanmer Heights to Coldean territory, which includes Stanmer, contains a lively assortment of residential streets including Coldean Lane, Wolseley Road, Carden Avenue, Hawkhurst Road and Lewes Road – with numerous others. Stanmer is a busy settlement but set within pleasant rural surroundings, which complement the urban layout.
Stanmer Park has revealed a number of interesting agricultural artifacts, which are looked after by the Stanmer Preservation Society. The society also oversees the upkeep of the rural museum, Donkey Wheel and local museum. Stanmer’s name is Saxon for ‘stoney’ and ‘boggy ground’. Standing stones are seen around the village especially Granny’s Belt, a stone circle in woodland dug up by a farmer in the locality. There is also a copse of trees westward of Stanmer that contain sarsen stones, which were originally buried.
