About Beddingham
Beddingham village in Lewes District, East Sussex, on the A26 to Newhaven, which has been connected to Glynde, was once the location of a Roman village and has a history stretching back to the Iron Age. The Saxons also inhabited the settlement later on. Modern day famous visitors include Virginia Woolf and war artist Eric Ravilious. Two sites of special scientific interest are found at Beddingham: Firle Escarpment and Asham Quarry. There is also a landfill site, which has now been set aside for downland.
Writer Virginia Woolf used to visit Asham House, not far from Beddingham, and between Newhaven and Lewes, during the Great War period. It was a Grade II house, which was knocked down in 1994 for the Beddingham landfill site. Painter Peggy Angus was another famous visitor to the area. She used to rent a cottage called Furlongs where she’d entertain people deemed to be high achievers in the arts, such as Eric Ravilious and John Piper. Beddingham also nods to royalty as it was once a royal minster in Saxon times. A coin in the reign of Offa of Mercia has been found in the area, suggesting that he conquered the settlement. King Alfred is also believed to have left the land to Aethelm, his nephew.
