Reigate is a market town in Surrey and within the commuter circuit for London. Visitors today find a welcoming shopping centre with sumptuous eateries along High Street, West Street and Bell Street, and other streets in the town centre. Neighbourhoods include South Park and Woodhatch but also the hamlets of Flanchford and Skimmington. New buildings were constructed after the London to Brighton railway in 1841, and that has led to a second linked town, now called Redhill. Reigate's name derives from 'Roe deer gate', named after a deer park. The settlement also boasts a lot of historical interest. Reigate was listed as an adminstrative area in the Anglo Saxon period and was called 'Cherchefelle' (open space by the hill) in the Domesday Book. There are flint mines from neolothic times along the ridge of the North Downs sited near Reigate. Archaeological finds include a Bronze Age spearhead in Prior Park; a Roman tile kiln in Rosehill, Doos Way, along with tiles of the period. Reigate Castle was build by the Second Earl of Surrey and a new town was built nearby in 1150, the template of the modern set-up. The caste was demolished in the 17th century and just gardens and caves remain, occasionally open to the public. Reigate Priory, now a Grade I listed building, was erected in the 13th century.
