East Grinstead, some 21 miles north-east of Brighton, and in Mid Sussex, is a charming town. Yet it suffered the highest rate of deaths in a single air raid in Sussex, on July 9 1943. A Luftwaffe bomber dropped a bomb which killed 108 cinemagoers at the Whitehall Theatre, including children and Canadian servicemen. Queen Victoria Hospital, where many survivors were treated, became famous for pioneering plastic surgery for RAF burns victims in WW2, brave men later known as the 'Guinea Pig Club'. East Grinstead has the longest spree of 14th century timber-framed buildings in the country. The town centre also contains a lively shopping scene and the Chequer Mead Community Arts Centre hosts a 349-seat theatre. Nature is also present, not only with Ashdown Forest but the Worth and Forest Way country parks; but also at Weir Wood reservoir, which is one of a number of nearby Sites of Special Scientific Interest. The town is also noted for a great range of faith-based organisations in relation to its size, with a variety of church communities.
