About Upper Dicker
Upper Dicker is a little village within reach of Eastbourne in East Sussex and linked to its counterpart Lower Dicker. It is centered around Michelham Priory, which has a long history with the monastery founded by the then-Lord of Pevensey, Gilbert de Laigle, following royal approval by King Henry III in 1229. The monastery included sections of other towns and villages including Brighton and Hailsham. The priory served as a medieval stopping place for travellers but Upper Dicker itself had its own importance as a trade hub and nearby woodland was cleared in the 1400s to make trade travel easier. Lower Dicker was then created on the route from Uckfield and gained a reputation in industry for crockery made from local clay. The Dickers today have a few retailers to serve the local community but they mainly serve as commuting spots to access work in Eastbourne and Hailsham.
