About Herstmonceux
Herstmonceux village in Wealden District, East Sussex, is also a civil parish, which contains Cowbeech, some hamlets and the impressive Herstmonceux Castle. These hamlets include Cowbeech Hill, Stunt’s Green, Foul Mile, Trolliloes, Ginger’s Green, Windmill Hill and Flowers Green. With its origins in Anglo-Saxon (Hyrst means wooded hill and the Monceux noble family lived there in the 12th century), the settlement is steeped in historical interest as well as beautiful surroundings. Herstmonceux Park and Pevensey Levels are Sites of Special Scientific Interest. Herstmonceux Castle hosts the Observatory Science Centre, and it is a study centre for Queen’s University, Kingston in Canada. A medieval festival is held at the castle each summer and a tradtional trade in the local area are trugs. These are baskets comprised of split willow within a chestnut or ash frame.
