About Horam

If there was a single village said to represent England in all its glory – Horam would be near the top of the list. Nestled in the heart of the South Downs, and once part of an ancient 1,700 square mile forest, the village is located just three miles south of Heathfield. Vines Cross is in the same parish and inhabitants are also dotted around the main area. Rights of way allow walkers to hike about the nearby countryside. Picture a stash of hedges, trees and narrow lanes – and imagine the changing landscape in Summer’s hues; Spring’s freshness; Autumn’s brown shades and the icy grip of Jack Frost in Winter. As the town council says, ‘It is possible to find peace and solitude in Horam’s countryside even though you are never far from habitation’. >The Cuckoo Trail, famous in Wealden District, passes through the village of Horam and it’s popular with walkers, horse riders and cyclists alike. The 12-mile route, which opened in 1995, goes from Heathfield to Polegate and there is a maintained path suitable for wheelchair users. The trail follows the former railway line from Eastbourne to Tunbridge Wells, which included Horam’s railway station known then as Horeham Road for Waldron, which closed in the 1960s. About a third of the southbound platform is still visible as well as some infrastructure.

Horam has some wonderful places of interest in the surrounding area. Sussex Farm Museum, based at Horam Manor, depicts the fascinating story of life on working farms during the past century or so. There are interesting artefacts set out such as tools and machinery; plus a window in time looking at the life of the farming family in general with toys and medicines among other examples of life in yesteryear. Other places of interest include Horam Camp Site, which is an ideal spot to bring your caravan or tent, and enjoy the countryside of the Wealden District. Golfers have a choice of Horam Park Golf Club or Wellshurst Golf Club, the former with nine holes and the latter boasting an 18-hole course. Both give players a chance to enjoy a great game while marvelling at the rural environment.

Horam is fortunate to enjoy accessible transport links with the Eastbourne Bus Company, which has organised a number of routes that take buses through the local area. The Cuckoo Trail, famous throughout the Wealden District, follows the route of the former railway line in the village. Faith facilities are also served well with Christ Church, the Anglican church, serving the pastoral needs of local residents alongside different weekly activities. The church is located in Horebeech Lane.
