Ripe village, on the A27 Brighton to Eastbourne road in East Sussex, is full of historic charm with a focus on agricultural trade throughout the years. The settlement has witnessed a number of name changes in various periods, from 'Alchitone' to 'Echenton' to the present day 'Ripe'. King Harold, who was killed by the Normans at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, owned the area when he was an earl. The Domesday Book later records the manors of Echentone under the headship of Richard de Aquila. Ripe itself contains some lovely old buildings, set upon unruffled land dominated by the North Downs. Ramblers and outdoor enthusiasts alike enjoy exploring the local area.
