Forest Row, found near Ashdown Forest in the north-west of East Sussex, punches above its weight in terms of historical interest, when you consider it is a village. For how many settlements in the area can claim to have been visited by USA President John F Kennedy? The president visited a service at Our Lady of the Forest Church in June 1963, just six months before he was assassinated. There have been famous residents in Forest Row too: comediam Ben Elton, Pink Floyd's David gilmour, and Engelbert Humperdinck among others. Buildings of note include Brambletye Inn, favoured by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle who included the inn as a hotel where Sherlock Holmes and Watson stay in the story, 'The Adventure of Black Peter'. Brambletye House, aka castle to locals, is featured in Horace Smith's 1826 novel of the same name. Forest Row became a self-sufficient 'transition village' in 2007. The nearby Weir Wood Reservoir is a Site of Special Scientific Interest with an array of intriguing residential and migrating birds.
