Cuckfield is a large village some 13 miles north of Brighton, not far from Haywards Heath. A historic event happened in nearby Whitemans Green in 1822 when Dr Gideon Mantell and his wife Mary Ann discovered iguanodon fossils for the first time, which sparked the now-global scientific studies of dinosaurs. Other points of interest include Holy Trinity Church of England Primary School, one of the oldest schools in the UK and the 13th century parish church, which has Norman foundations. Originally a market town, Cuckfield was an important stopping place for trade between Brighton and London with some 50 coaches per day recorded in 1820. Today, Cuckfield is known for its thriving community with a number of shops, social groups and interests.

Cuckfield has seen a fair number of famous residents. Film star Tara Fitzgerald, Kirsten Cooke (Michelle in Allo 'Allo!), acting brothers Edward and James Fox, and their brother, film producer Robert; actress Sally Gleeson of Bless This House fame and broadcasting geologist Hermione Cockburn - all have strong residential links to Cuckfield. There was also the 'greatest judge' of the 20th century, Alfred Denning, who lived there from 1935 to 1963. Katie Stewart, cookery writer, died in Cuckfield in 2013. Sports stars include Dom Dwyer, footballer in the USA; Harlequins rugby player, Ross Chisholm; and cricketer/footballer Tommy Cook.
